Since the early 20th century, the Scarab Club has hosted a members-only Gold Medal Exhibition. The Gold Medal is the club’s highest and most esteemed annual award. The exhibition runs from mid-November through the end of December each year.
Medals were awarded at the Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists at the Detroit Institute of Arts from 1917 to 1939/40. Beginning in 1940, Gold Medals were only awarded at the Scarab Club Gold Medal Exhibitions although monetary prizes for the Scarab Club Award were still given at the Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists
